As the UK works towards its target of reaching Net Zero by 2050, businesses are facing growing pressure to demonstrate credible environmental action and provide measurable carbon data across supply chains and procurement processes, including when tendering for both private sector and public sector projects.
However, for many SMEs, knowing where to start can be a challenge.
That’s where The Carbon Charter is helping businesses across Suffolk and Norfolk take practical, achievable steps towards sustainability while strengthening their environmental credentials.
Delivered by Groundwork East and overseen by the Environment Agency and Suffolk County Council, The Carbon Charter supports organisations to measure their carbon footprint, develop realistic action plans and gain independent accreditation recognising their progress.
More than 1,000 accreditations have now been awarded across the region, with businesses from hospitality and manufacturing sectors to professional services and the arts enrolling in the scheme. Organisations such as The New Wolsey Theatre, Mauldons Brewery and Stokes – are all demonstrating how sustainability can become part of long-term business resilience and growth.

Building on more than 15 years of success, the refreshed Carbon Charter now includes expanded assessment criteria covering climate risk, procurement, biodiversity, water use and Scope 3 emissions – helping businesses respond to growing expectations around ESG and environmental transparency.
Members also benefit from tailored award reports, one-to-one consultancy support, networking opportunities, sustainability workshops and discounted Carbon Literacy training.
Income generated through the scheme is reinvested into supporting businesses and communities across Suffolk and Norfolk.
