Birketts recruit top lawyer to Property Litigation Team

Top 100 UK law firm Birketts has strengthened its experienced Property Litigation Team with the arrival of Legal Director, Lynsey Ellard.

Recently listed as Tier 1 in the Legal 500 UK 2021 rankings, Lynsey joins Birketts’ highly regarded Property Litigation Team after spending more than 13 years at a top international City law firm. Her diligent work saw her described in the Legal 500 rankings as “a solicitor who can always see both the wood and the trees” and commended her ability to “bring order to seemly insurmountable volumes of detail or documents”.

Lynsey has a meticulous understanding of commercial property law, backed by years of experience handling commercial landlord and tenant disputes. She is an expert in her field with a track record of delivering expertly considered and commercially-minded advice regarding contested and uncontested 1954 Act lease renewals, tenant default and insolvency, service charge and dilapidations disputes, forfeiture, possession proceedings and trespass.

She also has a keen interest in pro bono work and held the role of Pro Bono Co-ordinator for the Real Estate Group. Her efforts assisting a pro bono client with a strongly contested lease renewal of their premises in South London saw her shortlisted for the LawWorks Pro Bono award for Best Contribution by an Individual.

Lynsey said: “With the firm’s footprint across the East of England and its excellent reputation, I am thrilled to join Birketts. I know I will be working within a team that puts their client at the forefront of all the decisions they make, whether clients are seeking strategic advice before acquiring sites for development or facing a dispute with their tenants.”

Speaking on Lynsey’s appointment, Partner and Head of Birketts Property Litigation Team, Richard Eaton said: “Our team advises on some of the highest-value and most complicated commercial property disputes in the East of England, and following our merger with London-based EC3 Legal this year we only expect to see the number of disputes we advise on increase further. The unique nature of this work, often on a case-by-case basis, requires a detailed understanding of the property law landscape and our clients’ needs.

As the region experiences an increase in demand for property dispute advice, the timing of Lynsey’s appointment could not be better. Her wealth of experience and pragmatic attitude to often-complex property disputes will make her an invaluable addition to Birketts. I have every confidence our clients will quickly see the benefit of Lynsey’s insight and legal advice.

She will join a team that is providing essential support to our clients, a team considered to be one of the largest and best regarded property departments in the East of England.”

Although she will be based in Cambridge, Lynsey with be working with colleagues across Birketts’ Chelmsford, Ipswich, London and Norwich offices.
