Eco data centre opens

An ‘eco data centre’ is now up and running in Peterborough.

The facility aims to meet demand for sustainable data storage and IT services, through the use of renewable energy, cutting-edge cooling technology, and environmental stewardship.

The launch event for the site – run by IT specialists DSM Group – was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Peterborough, along with Sam Carling MP, and other local business stakeholders.

CEO Mike Richardson said, “Our Eco Data Centre marks a pivotal moment for DSM and the wider IT industry. We are setting a new benchmark for sustainability in data services, blending high-performance technology with a strong commitment to protecting the environment.”

A 200kW solar farm has been installed on-site to significantly reduce the facility’s reliance on traditional energy sources and generate renewable power for day-to-day running.

DSM has also integrated U-Systems water-cooled racks – which consume far less energy than traditional air-cooling systems – for more efficient heat management by utilising water-based cooling.

The company says the data centre meets the needs of modern businesses by providing co-location services that offer secure, flexible, and scalable data hosting options.

It is based in an area currently being developed into an on-site nature reserve. The large lake on the site provides a natural habitat for wildlife and plays an essential role in the centre’s water management and cooling systems, helping to maintain optimal conditions for the water-cooled racks.

DSM is planning a second phase of expansion to further grow the centre’s capacity and capabilities, with a continued focus on sustainability.

Mike added, “This facility isn’t just a technological achievement, it’s a testament to the future of sustainable business. We’re building a legacy of environmental stewardship that’s designed to benefit both our clients and the planet.”
