World-class zoology plans boosted with new appointment

The Zoological Society of East Anglia (ZSEA), which runs Banham Zoo in Norfolk and Africa Alive in Suffolk, has appointed Dr Sharon Redrobe OBE MRCVS as Strategic Zoological Consultant

ZSEA’s vision is to become a flagship for sustainable tourism and a world-class education centre in the East of England. Proposals include Banham Zoo becoming a centre of excellence for conservation, as well as providing learning and skills opportunities to retain talent in the region and help people become advocates of climate change.

Dr Redrobe has over 25 years of extensive experience as an internationally renowned senior zoo and conservation professional, including 10 years as CEO of Twycross Zoo where she successfully steered the organisation from special measures to profitability.

In 2017, she was honoured with an OBE for her outstanding services to skills, science, and the economy. Additionally, she was recognised as one of the Top 50 Global Zoo & Aquarium Influencers in 2022.

With over 20 years of experience as a UK Government Zoo Inspector, Dr Redrobe has an in-depth understanding of regulatory compliance and best practices in the industry. She also has experience navigating the complex landscape of international bodies and engaging with all levels of government.

Dr Redrobe said: “I’m excited to be working with CEO Claudia Roberts in evaluating strategies and aligning them with the ZSEA masterplan. Together, we will focus on enhancing conservation knowledge, advancing national and international sector aspirations, exploring new perspectives, and identifying opportunities for optimal positioning and funding.”
