Leading Corporate Lawyer

Alexandra Nelson,   Partner, Birketts Corporate Team

While I had an interest in law from an early age, I didn’t do a law degree. Instead, I took the advice of a Barrister who told me to “go to university and study something interesting”. It was then after my economics degree concluded that I went ahead to scratch the itch and embarked on my legal career, funding myself through law school before becoming a paralegal, and subsequently securing a training contract.

I always knew I wanted to specialise as a corporate lawyer. The practice of corporate law is a team sport, and it is the people around you and the relationships that you build that make it such an exciting discipline. You need to be able to balance the technical side of what is possible within the law with the aspirations and personal goals of the person sitting on the other side of the table, applying flexible and creative thinking to find the best outcome. Whilst sometimes it can mean long days, the feeling of achievement for the client and your team when you successfully complete a deal is incomparable.

What I have found is that the more you progress in your career, the more your ambitions become aligned with what you want the wider team to achieve. In our Corporate Team we’re very excited about the pool of talent that we have, and are attracting, each year. We’re creating an environment where everyone can be their best and showing that great, top tier lawyers aren’t just found in London.
